hOW DOES C-IMT TESTING WORK?

The Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (C-IMT) test is a non-invasive, low-cost ultrasound procedure that is  recommended by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology to screen for heart disease in both healthy and at-risk individuals ages 45 or greater. However, the test can be performed on anyone wanting to identify their own risks of developing cardiovascular disease. The carotid arteries provide a “window” to the coronary arteries, and CIMT is an independent measure of potential future cardiovascular events including heart attacks, stroke, and even cardiac death.

CIMT tests are safe, painless, and only takes about ten to twenty minutes. Conductive gel is applied to the skin on the left and right sides of the neck. The ultrasound technician then uses a high-resolution B-mode ultrasound transducer to scan and annotate images of the carotid arteries, uploading the results directly to the Lab via a secure connection.
